CLERICAL DAY, FOR THE WIN!
Monday started off as Mondays always do: I walked to my bus stop, hopped on the bus, and realized my keys had fallen out of my pocket. Got off the bus, ran all the way back to my house where they were sitting on the ground outside my front door. Ran back to the bus stop, and got to school exactly 1 minute late. At 9am we had a giant breakfast for a teacher who is expecting. I ran into beautiful...

Mr. Dreamy McDreamerson.
A quick run down of our weekend. Friday during school: “Oh, you want to carpool? Here let me give you my number…” Friday night: Had a few drinks, stayed up til 5am (a whole 24 hours for the both of us) Saturday night: Watched exactly 5 minutes and 20 seconds of a movie, and quickly became background music. Slept, sexy time, and conversation until 6:00pm on Sunday (today). ...

Hilarious moment of the day:
One of the secretaries walked into my 7th period class and told one student, “You’re walking home today, not taking the bus.” This student proceeds to pack up all of his belongings, and walk out of the room. Everyone, myself included, just stared at him and watched him go! For SOME REASON he thought he had to walk home RIGHT THEN. DURING 7TH PERIOD. I ran out into the hallway...

aha moments: Last night, I saw the movie "Waiting... →
ahamoments: even though I expected disappointment. I left the theater upset. The movie pointed out flaws, which I don’t mind admitting, about the education system of America. However, it did not discuss any positives of public education. The system is not by any means a total failure. The film made vague… I agree completely! The film was INCREDIBLY biased, and the logic and...

Today I taught my first lesson.
IT WAS AWESOME. Well, the lesson itself really wasn’t, because I had to more-or-less read straight from the script, but you know that old saying that teaching is 1/4 preparation and 3/4 theatre- and I acted the hell out of that lesson! The students actively participated! I didn’t have to drag any answers out from the students. They were all so excited that I was finally teaching, it...

Creativity in the Classroom?
I’m the type of person who dreams big. In many aspects of my life, I rely on creativity and imagination. It is one of my most significant assets. One of my greatest concerns is that I won’t be able to bring that into my classroom. I live by a scripted curriculum. If “they” heard me calling it “scripted” I would get seriously reprimanded. Call it what you want,...

SNOW DAY
Thank the student-teaching gods. There is NO WAY I would have been able to go to school after my procedure this morning. Yay, snow! In other news: SO NOT READY TO TEACH NEXT WEEK. I HAVEN’T EVEN OBSERVED A LESSON YET. (Thanks, testing.)

Where does a pencil like to travel?
Pencil-vania! This joke was told by one of my boys, right in the middle of the day when I needed a pick me up. I really like this kid. He is so bright, and always has something funny to say. Also, he comes to me when he needs something, which makes me happy :-) I had to give him the joke, “What do you call cheese that isn’t yours…. Nacho cheese!” Yeah, he loved it....

Today I went to my first staff meeting. The focus was to identify weaknesses that are school-wide regarding behavior management. I was really excited, because yesterday I noticed TONS. Well, not a ton, but I was really concerned about transitioning classes. The school runs on a bell system and is like a middle/high school where students transition each period (or every 2, if they are taking...

-Sylvia Ashton Warner Today was much like yesterday: nothing but testing (and literally making over 1,000 copies), and tomorrow will be even more testing (but fortunate I get to leave 50 minutes early tomorrow to unfortunately attend ST seminar). However, I finally got to meet all of classes- a total of 66 students, and I’m proud to say I know 90% of their names (100% if they are sitting in...

1 day down, 100 to go.
THANK YOU [insert city name here] FOR YOUR WINTRY MIX AND 2 HOUR DELAY. SIKE. At my school, if there is a 2hr delay teachers are still supposed to arrive on time. I arrived at 8:15, after ice skating through the streets. The first face I see when I walk in those big doors is beautiful piece of a man. I’ve been told to introduce myself to EVERYONE, so I did. Turns out he is ALSO a third...

I need ideas for a good old fashion brown-bag lunch. Something easy to make (or buy!), something that doesn’t need to be refrigerated, and something QUICK to eat!

Meet your challengers: 21 year old little white girl from middle-class suburbia with impossible ideals of “the way things SHOULD be”  A major city’s urbanized Public School with curriculums on lock-down keeping things “ just they way they are” The challenge?             Mix the two together for fifteen weeks, with hopes of producing one kick-ass teacher, who has managed to hopefully...
